Therapy Group of DC
Rewriting the stories that shape how you see yourself
If you’ve been carrying stories about who you’re supposed to be — shaped by your family, your culture, your workplace, or just the weight of navigating the world with multiple identities — I help you examine those narratives and decide which ones are actually yours.
My work goes beyond surface-level support. Using a culturally responsive framework rooted in narrative and relational therapy, I help clients dismantle the stories that no longer serve them and build new ones that feel grounded, honest, and true. Whether you’re working through anxiety, relationship patterns, identity questions, or the particular exhaustion of code-switching through your day, I create a space where you can show up exactly as you are.
“I bring humor and authenticity to the room, but our work is focused on concrete growth. My goal is to help you build a life — and relationships — that feel grounded, honest, and sustainable.”
Dominique Harrington, MA.Ed., LPC, NCC, Therapist DC
I draw on narrative therapy, relational therapy, and person-centered approaches — a combination that puts your lived experience at the center of the work. Narrative therapy helps you see the stories you’ve internalized about yourself and examine where they came from, so you can choose which ones to keep and which to rewrite. The relational foundation means I pay close attention to the dynamics between us — how you connect, where you hold back, and what patterns show up in your relationships.
In practice, this looks like warm, direct conversation. I lean toward exploration over rigid structure, following what’s most alive for you rather than working through a checklist. I’m comfortable sitting with hard feelings and direct enough to name what I see.

Take the first step — we’ll help you get started.
I’ve spent my career working at the intersections of identity — race, culture, gender, sexual orientation, and how those layers shape everything from your relationships to your self-worth. I founded Exhale, a psychotherapy group for Black women focused on processing and healing, and I trained at Whitman-Walker Health providing affirming care to LGBTQ+ clients and BIPOC communities. You don’t have to explain the basics with me; we can go deeper from the start.
I also bring Gottman Method training to my couples work — research-based tools for managing conflict and deepening intimacy, combined with a narrative lens that explores what each partner is bringing to the relationship underneath the surface. If you’re sorting through identity questions, relationship challenges, or the feeling that something about how you’re living doesn’t quite fit — I’m here for that work.
First, we’re building a relationship. I’ll get to know you and how I can help — at your pace. We’ll explore what brings you to therapy and what changes you’re looking for in your life. My style is warm and authentic, so you can always feel free to come as you are. There’s no pressure to have it all figured out before you walk in.
Narrative therapy is built on the idea that the stories we tell about ourselves — and the ones others have told us — shape how we see the world and our place in it. In our work together, we’ll look at the narratives you’ve been carrying, figure out where they came from, and decide which ones actually belong to you. It’s less about diagnosing what’s wrong and more about helping you become the author of your own story. It’s empowering, practical, and deeply respectful of your lived experience.
Yes — couples work is a core part of my practice. I’m trained in the Gottman Method, which brings research-based tools for managing conflict, deepening intimacy, and strengthening your friendship as a couple. I combine that with my narrative and relational approach, which means we’re not just learning communication skills — we’re also exploring the stories each partner brings to the relationship and how those shape your dynamics. I work with couples navigating conflict, cultural differences, premarital questions, divorce, and everything in between.
Absolutely — it’s central to my work. Whether you’re processing questions about race, culture, gender, sexual orientation, spirituality, or how all of those intersect in your daily life, I bring both personal understanding and professional training to this space. I completed the NBCC Minority Fellowship, trained at Whitman-Walker Health, and founded a therapy group for Black women — so I’ve spent my career working at these intersections. You don’t have to explain the basics; we can go deeper from the start.
Either way, we’ll make it easy. Get started with Dominique directly, or tell us what you’re looking for and we’ll help you find the right fit. Takes a few minutes — no commitment.
